Guidance for EU/EEA Nationals

If you’re an EU or EEA national applying for a Transport for London (TfL) Private Hire Driver Licence, you’ll need to demonstrate that you have the right to live and work in the UK as part of the licensing process.

Do I need to prove my right to work?

Yes. TfL requires applicants for a Private Hire Driver Licence to have the right to live and work in the UK.

For EU/EEA nationals, this may include demonstrating your immigration status, such as settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS).

I have settled status

If you have already been granted settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, TfL's EU/EEA guidance states that you do not need to take any further action in relation to obtaining settled status.

You should make sure your immigration and right-to-work information remains up to date and follow any instructions provided as part of your TfL application.

I have pre-settled status

You are permitted to work in the UK with valid pre-settled status.

If you currently have pre-settled status, you should follow the latest Home Office guidance regarding your immigration status and any action you may need to take in the future.

What if I haven't applied to the EU Settlement Scheme?

The main EU Settlement Scheme application deadline was 30 June 2021. If you have not applied or are unsure about your immigration status, you should check the latest GOV.UK guidance to understand whether you can make a late application or whether another immigration status applies to you.

It is important to confirm that you have the appropriate right to work before progressing with your TfL Private Hire Driver Licence application.

What about Irish citizens?

Irish citizens are treated differently under the Common Travel Area arrangements. TfL's guidance states that Irish nationals remain free to live and work in the UK and do not need settled or pre-settled status for this purpose.

Before applying for your TfL licence

Make sure you:

• Check that your immigration status is valid and up to date
• Follow the latest Home Office/GOV.UK guidance if you have settled or pre-settled status
• Ensure the personal details on your official documents are consistent
